What is BMI

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that assesses whether your weight is proportional to your height. It's calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters (kg/m²). It's a quick screening tool to identify underweight, normal, overweight and obesity.

Interpreting the results

  • Underweight: BMI below 18.5
  • Normal: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9
  • Obese: BMI of 30 or higher

Limitations of BMI

BMI doesn't distinguish between lean mass and fat mass. Athletes with high muscle mass may appear "overweight" despite being healthy. It doesn't account for age, sex, ethnicity, or fat distribution. For a full assessment consult a doctor or nutritionist.
